LITERACY
Literacy is the key to unlocking learning potential. Teach a child to read at an early age so that he can read the Bible. Hire mamas who can read so they can read to their children at night. Require writing exercises in class to develop critical thinking skills. Haiti must do better than 60% literate. ESMI is also positioned to teach church members to read to improve that statistic across communities.
PROCESSES
Processes must be in place for tracking attendance and exam scores; providing extra support to struggling students, organized record-keeping, exam make-up, collecting tuition, enforcing good behavior, teacher hiring and training, rewarding academic achievement and the overall healthy functioning of any school.
PEER LEADERSHIP
Empowering students to lead their peers develops leadership skills and inspires others to achieve academic goals. There is strength in numbers and students outnumber their teachers; they outnumber politicians. Students can lead change in their schools and communities. We must provide opportunities and encourage a mindset to do so.
Effective learning starts with good nutrition. The brain depends completely on glucose to operate normally. Low sugar levels are linked to poor attention and cognitive function. It is critical to learning that students have a meal heavy in starches combined with a healthy protein or fat like avocado or olive oil. The addition of protein or fat slows the absorption rate of glucose, lessening the stressful spike of simple carbohydrates, which are digested quickly.
